Dr. Maria Shelby Jones is a cognitive & developmental psychologist whose research program examines the behavioral and neural mechanisms of implicit gendered racial bias and its effects on intersectional identity development, physical & mental health, and persistence in STEM education in children and adults. She graduated magna cum laude with her B.A. in psychology from Spelman College & her Ph.D. in cognitive and developmental psychology from Emory University. Funded by the National Science Foundation, her latest research explores the effects of experiencing discrimination at the intersection of multiple historically disadvantaged social identities (e.g., race, class, disability) and its effects on psychological well-being. Dr. Jones has made it her goal to dispel stereotypes on what a scientist ‘looks like’ through her various mentoring programs. She empowers K-12 & undergraduate students of color to stop fearing math and science to increase accessibility to and inclusivity in STEM.
